AEROPHILATELIE - "AMERICA" 1927 by Commandant BYRD - DIRECT FLIGHT UNITED STATES / FRANCE. VERY RARE ACCIDENT MAIL with Pilot's autograph - 300 folds carried, many destroyed in the accident. The "AMERICA" took off from Roosevelt Field / N.Y. at 5:25 a.m. bound for Paris. The plane is a three-engine Fokker. For most of the journey, it had to contend with fog, and later the compass was out of action. The morning of July 1st - at 2:30 a.m. local time - marked the dramatic end of a raid that had begun so well: the America fell into the water, in the rain, 200 meters from the coast at VER sur MER / Normandy. The 4 aviators were able to save themselves thanks to the rubber dinghy they had brought with them and the help of local people. "Le Télégramme" headlines: "The ocean is conquered for the 3rd time, after Lindberg and Chambertin, BYRD has crossed the Atlantic. On July 9, BYRD and his crew are received at the CALAIS Town Hall; Byrd receives the title of CITIZEN of CALAIS for his feat.
