Indian art Large Bodhisattva figure in gray schist. Gandhara, ca. 4th cent. AD. . . Cm 111x34. The large Bodhisattva figure is depicted standing on a meticulously worked square base. He holds his right hand in a gesture to ward off fear, his left hand extended along his side. She wears the ankle-length dhoti fastened around her waist with elaborate drapery and the heavier sanghati open at the front to show her bare chest. The draperies are executed with skill and naturalistic attention peculiar to the Gandhara style that dates back to the Greco-Roman sculptural influence in the region.The bust is adorned with multiple necklaces and carries prayers from the Iranian tradition.The face with almond-shaped eyes and moustache is framed by an elaborate hairstyle, the hair forms a chignon stopped with a precious headband, long locks fall to the shoulders enhanced by the large halo that encloses and highlights the refined face with a benevolent expression.Provenance: Italian private collection. Purchased from Christie's, "Gandharan Buddhist Art from the collection of a Prince," September 20, 2007, lot 253. Lot not exportable from Italy.
