Meriadec Gouyon Matignon de St Loyal (1824- ?) Notebook of drawings, including landscapes and portraits of Algeria in the 1840s/1850s Comprising 15 watercolors between Setif and Constantine and 16 graphite drawings, in a notebook with cloth cover 12.4 x 18.7 cm Born in Saint Servan on January 28, 1824, Meriadec Gouyon graduated from St Cyr in 1820, became aide-major to the royal guard in 1825, and was appointed head of the topographical section in June 1840, Bibliography: Le Livre d'Or de l'Algérie by Narcisse Faucon, Preface by colonel TRUMELET A watercolor depicting Maltese in Sétif (the Maltese were the first to settle in Algeria in 1830, representing 15,000 nationals). At the end of the album, a graphite drawing of the Greek quarter in Constantinople.
