"Wurtz, George Christophe, Strasbourg Temple Neuf, 14.12.1752 - Versailles, 09.09.1823 [...]. Pupil at the Protestant Gymnasium from 1759, matriculated at the Faculty of Philosophy in 1767, candidate in medicine in 1777 in his native town. His observations and research enabled him to compose and publish an original map of medicines in the form of a world map, under the title Conamen mappae generalis medicamentorum simplicium secundum affinitates virium naturalium, nova methodo geographica dispositorum, cum tabula aenea, in 1778. This classification of medical substances, by genus, species and degree, in various regions, according to whether they participate more or less from earth, water, air or fire, was accepted by several professors of Leipzig and Strasbourg and earned him the congratulations of the famous Buffon. (16)-806-(2)-(31) pages. Antique full vellum with overlay. Two small vellum tears at top of spine and on one flap. Very good condition inside, despite paper tending to brown. "Prosperi Alpini, Italian physician and botanist, was born in Marostica in 1553, and died in Padua in 1617. To expand his medical knowledge, he left Venice for Egypt in 1580, spending three years in Cairo, visiting the banks of the Nile, Alexandria and the Greek islands. On his return to Italy in 1586, he became physician to Admiral Doria, and spent some time in Genoa. He returned to Padua in 1593, where he became director of the botanical garden. Prosperi Alpini was one of the leading naturalists of his time". Uncommon first edition. As a botanist, Alpini was the first to describe the coffee tree. As a physician, he offered with this work the first modern semiotic treatise (i.e. the branch of medicine that studies the signs and symptoms of a sick subject). Even in the 18th century, the great Dutch physician Boerhaave, who edited numerous editions, was firmly convinced that this work should be recommended to all students.
