In the taste of Etienne de SILHOUETTE (Limoges 1709 - Bry-sur-Marne 1767) Portrait-loaded silhouette of a man in right profile India ink and gold highlights. Titled Comédie italienne at the top. Slightly oiled, small stains and small hole at top right. Three other portraits in the same technique and of the same dimensions. 21.3 x 14.5 cm Etienne de Silhouette, former comptroller of finance under Louis XV, who was dismissed from the Court for his desire to tax the wealthiest, popularized the "Silhouette" portrait thanks to a technique that involved projecting the model's contours onto a parchment screen, lit by a lamp of his own invention. The word "silhouette" is therefore an antonomasia, a common noun.
