India, late 19th century Gouache on paper, done in a realistic style. The maharaja is dressed in Anglo-Indian garb. He is seated on a richly caparisoned chestnut stallion, the saddle heavily embroidered with gold. Miniature size: 29 x 33 cm Provenance: This lot is sold as a temporary import. Ram Singh II began his reign at birth, under his mother's regency, since his father had died a few months earlier. Nicknamed "Ram the Great" or "Ram the Peaceful", he is renowned for having made peace with all his kingdom's enemies.
