L'amoureux quittant sa bien-aimée

India, late 18th century Album page painted in gouache depicting a drowsy Radha in the courtyard of a palace under an architectural canopy lit by a rising sun, visited by Krishna wearing two wreaths of flowers. Size: 21 x 15 cm The "raga" was originally a musical theme from medieval India. From the 16th century onwards, it became known as "ragamala". Each raga theme represents a mood, a season or a specific time of day, accompanied by a brief inscription suggesting a meditative mood, most often love and devotion.
