Jali - Ecran aux lotus

Mughal India, Deccan, circa 1800 Limestone architectural bas-relief with remains of white and blue pigments. It features a lotus bouquet framed by a checkerboard and colonnettes. On the right-hand side, a pilaster element. Size: 53 x 65 cm This large sandstone panel probably decorated the facade of a pavilion within a palace. Its decoration features the lotus that abound in the ponds and lakes of the Bengal countryside and the Delhi sultanate. In Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, it is considered a symbol of purity and life.
