Description

* Portrait présumé de Sayyid Muzzafar, commandant en chef de Abul Hasan Qutb Shah de Golconde

North India, early 18th century Gouache and pencil enhanced with gold on paper, depicting a nobleman facing right. He wears a sumptuous coat of honor with fur collar, woven with gold thread and floral branches; he wears a golden belt at the waist matching the style of his coat, and red velvet boots embroidered with gold. Miniature size: 20 x 10 cm Hunting coats similar to the one worn by this nobleman were extremely popular at the Mughal court in the 17th and 18th centuries. Several portraits of Shah Jahan depict the elderly emperor wearing such a coat (cf. Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, inv. no. IN 50.3; and Sotheby's, March 31, 2021, no. 58). A recent study reveals a resemblance between the present portrait and those of Sayyid Muzzafar, commander-in-chief of the Sultan of Golconde Abul Hasan Qutb Shah, often depicted wearing this type of fur-collared coat, albeit at an older age. See The Art newspaper, "Freshman art history student uncovers identity of Mughal miniature", December 10, 2020. Provenance: British collection, acquired from an American collection. This lot is sold as a temporary import. A Mughal portrait of a man wearing a golden coat of honor with fur collar, North India, 18th century
