India, Lucknow, 18th century Gold-highlighted gouache on strong cardboard mounted as an album page, with gold scrolling floral border on a blue background. Margins speckled with gold. Verso, a quatrain calligraphed in "nasta'liq" in white ink, on a background of floral scrolls. Painting: 22 x 14 cm. Page : 45 x 31 cm. Set on the terrace of a palace, the scene depicts two richly adorned noblewomen exchanging lotuses. Flowers played an important role in courtly art, as evidenced by the paintings on the palace walls in the background. The lotuses they carry bloom in the basins of the palaces in which they find themselves. Provenance : Former British collection since 1980-82. This lot is sold as a temporary import.
