L'attente

India, 18th century Gold-highlighted gouache on strong cardboard mounted as an album page with gold scroll border. On verso, seventeen calligraphic lines in shikasté script. Miniature size: 22.5 x 15.5 cm (page: 45 x 31 cm) Ragamala, a literary genre adapted for painting, illustrates thematic scenes that share a mood, a season or a specific time of day, accompanied by a brief inscription suggesting a meditation, most often on love and devotion. Here, a woman with richly adorned fans stands on a plain occupied by a calm, tree-shaded lake. The sun, still barely raking, testifies to the patience and expectation of this pensive young woman.
