Iran, Safavid art, late 16th - early 17th century Ink, pigments, gold, on paper mounted as an album page Calligraphy: 19.5 x 10 cm Sight page: 30.5 x 18.5 cm Mir Emad is one of the most famous calligraphers of the Safavid period, whose hand has been a model for nasta'liq scribes ever since. Born in Qazvin, he lived for a time in Tabriz, then traveled to Baghdad, Damascus and Aleppo, before settling permanently in Isfahan, where he entered the court of Shah Abbas I.
