This painting illustrates the nine graha of the Ayurvedic treatises of the Mahābhārata: Surya (sun), Chandra (moon), Mangal (Mars), Buddha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (dragon's head) and Ketu (dragon's tail). Sometimes planets in astrological treatises, sometimes demons in medical and tantric writings, they transmute into divinities in ritual and devotional literature.
