Quatre cuillères à sherbet Ottoman Turkey, 18th century Two sets of two spoons, one in bone and horn, the other in mother-of-pearl, copper, coral and horn. Condition: very slight chips. L. from 22 to 22.5 cm. This type of large spoon was mainly used for tasting sorbet, an icy granita covered in syrup that was very popular at the Ottoman court, and which gave its name to French sorbet. They would have adorned only the most luxurious tables in Istanbul, in palaces such as Topkapi or in the homes of the nobility and wealthy merchants. Related work : J. M.
