Turkey, Kütahya, 18th-19th century Siliceous ceramic egg-shaped pendant with polychrome decoration on a white background of three yellow and green seraphim punctuated by six brown manganese Orthodox crosses. H. 8 cm. Votive objects, they symbolize fertility and materialize acts of devotion in fulfillment of a vow or as a sign of thanks for a grace obtained. In addition to their religious connotations, they also had a practical function: placed between the lantern and the chains, they prevented rodents from lapping up the lamp's oil.
