Egypt or Syria, circa 8th century Carved bone, decorated with vine branches. H. 7.5 to 10 cm The use of carved animal bones became popular for decorating furniture and household objects in Byzantine and early Umayyad Egypt. Holes were usually drilled for mounting. Examples have been found during excavations of houses in Alexandria and Fustat (ancient Cairo).
