Belgian-born Jesuit priest, Arabist orientalist and historian of Islam, Henri Lammens (d.1937) spent most of his life in Syria/Lebanon. From 1897 onwards, he devoted all his time to research, travel and writing. He visited the remotest corners of Syria to learn more about its inhabitants, customs and language. His first publications were of an educational nature (a dictionary and a manual for Arabic speakers). His main works then concerned the history of Islam and the Arab world, a field in which he became one of the great specialists of his time, and in which his works are still authoritative.
