Joseph Harpignies and Charles Francis Daubigny, Alfred Philippe Roll's subjects reflected current social and republican issues, making him a follower of naturalism, the artistic movement created by Zola and Castigny. A recognized artist under the Third Republic, he created numerous sets. Along with Rodin and Puvis de Chavannes, he was the founder of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts and the author of numerous studies of nude women, from which emanates a strange charm, a troubled emotion of the flesh.
