(lifts, small chips and restorations) 91.5 x 74 cm Provenance: private collection, Château de Taurennes, Tourtour Saint Barthélemy is based on the canvas (93 x 74 cm) by Nicolas de Largillierre in a private collection (see anonymous sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, April 16, 2008, no. 8, reproduced in color). Largillierre is said to have painted Saint Barthélemy as a counterpart to other apostle figures, only one of which is known today (Canvas, 92 x 73.5 cm) and held in a private collection. Our Saint Jacques thus completes our knowledge of the series of apostles Largillierre painted for his house on rue Geoffroy-Langevin (see exhibition catalog Nicolas de Largillierre 1656-1746, Paris, Musée Jacquemart-André, 2003-2004, no. 17, reproduced in color).
