Snuffbox for Emperor Napoleon I on St. Helena. Tortoiseshell, rectangular, featuring a coin with the profile of Alexander the Great set in an octagonal motif on the lid. Gold mounting engraved inside: "Cette boite qui appartenoit à l'Empereur Napoléon et dont il se servoit à St Hélène est échue en partage à sa soeur Caroline". Gold tab. Title and guarantee hallmarks Paris 1798-1809. Goldsmith's hallmark of Pierre André Montauban. B.E. Consulate-Empire period. Provenance : -Emperor Napoleon I. -Received by his sister Caroline Murat, on the death of Madame Mère. -Collection of the Princes Murat. -Christie's sale of November 29, 2017, n°9. Historical background: The presence of antique coins on the Emperor's snuffboxes was a habit adopted by him and the other Consuls as early as 1803, when the Curator of Coins passed on antique coins to them, reminding them of the virtues with which the new masters of France were to adorn themselves. On February 13, 1809, Auguste-Laurent de Rémusat, Grand Master of Napoleon's wardrobe, was authorized by the Minister of the Interior to take a series of antique coins from the Cabinet des Médailles to decorate new snuffboxes for the Emperor. Our coin appears to be modelled on the gold staters of the reign of Alexander the Great. In the Emperor's will, our box may correspond to n°9 of the second fund given to his son, the King of Rome, and shared between the Emperor's siblings after his death and that of Madame Mère. This could be snuffbox no. 11 ("Une tête d'Alexandre (la seule qui existe)").
