A SET OF EIGHT GOLD-SPLASHED BRONZE FIGURES OF HORSES, LATE QING DYNASTY A SET OF EIGHT GOLD-SPLASHED BRONZE FIGURES OF HORSES, LATE QING DYNASTY China, 19 th century. Well cast, the bronze horses standing in different poses, some grazing and other frozen mid gallop, their bodies with splashes of gilt, the manes thinly incised, and the eyes once inlaid in white porcelain. Provenance: Holzapfel collection, Geneva, Switzerland. This lot was acquired by second generation members of the Holzapfel family after 1970 and has remained in the family ever since. Condition: Good condition with some wear, casting flaws, small nicks, light encrustations, and the inlaid eyes lost. Weight: 810 g (total) Dimensions: Length 9.7 cm (longest)

Large Medieval Eurasian Iron Knight's Military Horse Bit. 12th-13th century A.D. The snaffle bit with two rectangular openwork cheekpieces decorated with an openwork plaque, the surface ornamented with scales and lozenge elements. Cf. Shcerbakov, I. Dzys, Ledovoe Battle, 1242 A.D. (The Battle of the Peipus Lake), Moscow, 2001 (in Russian), fig.12, for a similar bit. 624 grams, 37.5 cm (14 3/4 in.). The snaffle bits consisted of two parts: a bit, which was placed in the horse's mouth, and cheekpieces, which were connected to the reins and head strap. From the private collection of a London gentleman, from his grandfather's collection formed before the early 1970s.
