NEO-RENAISSANCE CABINET, SECOND HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY By Charles Hunsinger (1823-1893) In ebony, ivory inlay, lapis lazuli plaques, the architectural front opens with two drawers and a leaf revealing a mahogany and rosewood interior, a drawer in the waist revealing a mahogany and lemon wood interior fitted with a leather-covered writing case, supported by tapered uprights joined by a crotch shelf, signed "Hunsinger" on the drawer; small accidents and missing parts. Charles Hunsinger (1823-1893) was one of the great cabinetmakers of the second half of the 19th century, along with Fourdinois, Beurdeley and Wassmus, whose work is linked to the taste for historicism that characterized the period, such as the reconstruction of the Château de Chantilly by the Duc d'Aumale. Specializing in wood and ivory marquetry, Hunsinger is listed as "fabricant de meubles de luxe et de fantaisie" (Almanach du commerce, 1859). From late 1872 to 1883, he joined forces with Wagner and won a silver medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle for "a marquetry library".
