EXCEPTIONAL AND VERY RARE MIDDLE DONKEY BACK BUREAU FORMING A REGENCY ACCOUNT TABLE Attributed to Bernard VAN RIESEN BURGH (1696-1767) The set is composed of two parts. The lower part forms the support for the desk, composed of four double-curved legs revealing a drawer in the front, the top veneered in rosewood; the legs terminate in finely chased bronze sabots. Removable top in the shape of a donkey's back fitted into the base, which was used by the nobility in their beds to write their correspondence. The dos d'âne has a tilting writing surface revealing five curved drawers and a secret drawer hidden by a sliding shelf. Both pieces of furniture are finished in contemporary violet wood. Original keyways and locks. This bureau dos d'âne is said to come from a very special order from the Régence period. The furniture is in perfect condition, with no major restoration.
