Original CHIRVAN carpet (Caucasus), late 19th century Technical features: Wool velvet on wool foundation. On an ivory field with fine speckled latticework, four zoomorphic brick medallions in the shape of "crabs" stand out. They are decorated with small polychrome flowers and rosettes. Their centers are adorned with navy and anthracite octagons embellished with exuberant poly-lobed floral forms. Two figurative eagle-shaped pendants encircle the ensemble. A small brick counter border with gold crosses highlights the whole. Two other counter borders in navy and brick with "running dogs" frame the main anthracite border with a succession of stylized multicolored cruciform flowers.
