Growing up on the Island of Anglesey, Williams experienced the often-turbulent conditions of the sea, extending his oeuvre beyond Welsh mountains and valleys and inspiring a series of works depicting the Welsh coastline. After being dismissed from the army following an epilepsy diagnosis in 1938, Williams took up art as suggested by his doctor. He enrolled in the Slade School of Fine Art in 1941 as a beginner and left having won the Slade Portrait Prize. Williams eventually returned to Wales, drawn by the element of melancholy in the dark hills, a melancholy he resonated with as he battled depression. This, combined with an eye condition which made it difficult to work in bright sunlight, led to a preference of painting stark, cloudy landscapes in muted tones.Central to the success of Williams' works is his masterful handling of light and texture. In Sea Mist, Williams adeptly captures the serene tranquillity of calm waters enveloped in mist, merging with the clouds above into a seamless expanse of soft, grey planes. Working in the location directly, Williams preferred to use palette-knives which enabled the impasto style which has become synonymous with his work.
