The catalyst for the reforms started on 5th January 1968 when Alexander Dubcek was elected First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia lasting until 21st August 1968 when the Soviet Union and members of the Warsaw Pact invaded the country in order to supress reforms.
