His poems often depicted scenes of suburban life, rural landscapes, and his love for England's architectural heritage. He served as the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1972 until his death in 1984, using his position to promote poetry and celebrate British culture. In addition to his poetry, Betjeman was a passionate advocate for architectural preservation.
