Friedrich H Schiff, Maskee. A Shanghai sketchbook by Schiff. s.n., s.l., [1940]. 27*19.5cm, about twenty pages. Printed drawings by Schiff, colored by Schiff who also signs on the first page. Numbered copy "A 409" (print run not specified). Friedrich Schiff (1908-1968) was an Austrian-Jewish cartoonist and long-time resident of Shanghai, where he was a keen observer of the city's war-torn inhabitants and life in the late 1930s. Few details are known about the life of Friedrich Schiff, one of Shanghai's great cartoonists between the world wars. Born in Austria in 1908, he went into exile in Shanghai in 1929. He returned to Austria in 1947 and died there in 1968. In 1929, Schiff arrived in Shanghai to escape Nazi persecution. A very fine work.
