Description

Study for a Saint Jerome Pen and brown ink on blue paper 21.6 x 16 cm. Provenance: Anonymous sale, Sotheby's, New York, January 8, 1991, lot 12 (as Palma Giovane). Traditionally attributed to Jacopo Palma il Giovane (1544-1628), this drawing is more closely related in style and handwriting to a group of drawings attributed by Nicholas Turner to the young Greco ("A proposal for El Greco as a Draftsman", Master Drawings, vol.45, 2007, n°3, pp.291-324). In particular, it can be compared with a Dead Christ Supported by a Figure in the Louvre (op. cit., fig.26 p.308) or a study for a Entombment also in the Louvre (op. cit., fig.27 p. 309).
