[Missel, reliure de P, gouaches] Printed book of hours entirely enhanced in gouache and enriched with hors-texte gouaches. S.l., s.n., s.d. [painted between 1856 and 1861]. In-8, [16]-92p & 38 additional gouaches (R°V° of 19 leaves). Missal entirely gouache-painted by an anonymous artist, Nathalie Lequesne, who left her name on the verso of one of the first leaves, with the notation "com[mencé] jan[vier] 1856 fin oct[obre] 1861". The printed missal reproduces in black and white a very classical book of hours, borrowing styles from books of hours of the 14th and 15th centuries. The artist has enhanced all the decorations, the letters and some of the words. The calendar decoration appears to have been entirely added (without printing underneath). She then added 38 gouaches, one side of the leaf having a religious illumination, the other a simpler design (geometric, butterfly). One leaf has two scenes (hell). The first and last leaves show an oak branch with three acorns on one side and a coat of arms with three acorns and ermine on the other. His initials also appear on the verso of one leaf, on the moiré endpaper and on the box. Binding signed (in the moire) A Despierres, relieur de l'Empereur [Napoléon III]. Full brown morocco, spine ribbed, fleuron in the boxes, boards with pressed decoration into which a Maltese cross (metallic) has been inserted, decoration with a set of cold and gilt irons, gilt edges and guilloche with red ermines, gilt fittings on the corners and on part of the edges, clasps, moiré endpapers, lace framing the inside covers. Near-perfect condition (one fitting has moved slightly). Brown chagrin box with moire and red velvet interior (matching the binding). Box also signed by the bookbinder with a small piece of leather inside. Minor wear to the box. Magnificent work.
