Uniforms. [Dutch troops]. Sl, sd. In-4, 6 finely watercolored plates, 21.5 x 28 cm, with subjects in a wide yellow border, captioned in German (except the last, in French), leaves in blue chagrin folder with cloth overlays and laces, smooth muted spine (modern binding). A good copy. Undated and unsigned, these six pleasant plates with very static subjects are not easy to place. In 1795, the Régiment de Schepper (plate II) was one of the 24 "national regiments" named after their colonel, and given an order number in 1772 (Schepper was listed as no. 1). [HANCARVILLE (Pierre-François Hugues d'). Monumens de la vie privée des douze Césars, d'après une suite de pierres gravées sous leur règne. [And] Monumens du culte secret des dames romaines, pour servir de suite aux Monumens de la vie privée des XII Césars. A Caprées [Nancy], Chez Sabellus [Le Clerc], 1780-1784. 2 vol. in-4 of XII-196 pp. with frontispiece and 50 plates of erotic cameo engravings; XXVII-98 pp. with frontispiece and 50 plates of erotic cameo engravings. Marbled calf, ornate ribbed spine, green marbled title-pages, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt edges (period binding). The antiquarian Hughes, known as d'Hancarville (1719-1805), collaborated with William Hamilton in his archaeological researches in Naples; "The engravings are almost all of Hancarville's invention, and not taken from ancient stones or cameos as the preface implies. The text offers an explanation full of passages borrowed from Suetonius and Martial. Work condemned to destruction in 1815 and 1826" (Apollinaire, Fleuret et Perceau, L'Enfer de la Bibliothèque Nationale, nos. 343 and 911). Brown stain in lower margin of first few pages of first volume. Minor foxing and spotting. Apart from these minor defects, a very fine copy in a fine uniform contemporary binding (P. Pia, Les Livres de l'Enfer, 504). Bookplate Louis-Emmanuel-Jules-Scipion Rousset. Ex-libris BL (Bob Luza, 1896-1980, Dutch bibliophile specializing in curiosa).
