ALEXANDER DERKACHENKO: SKULL AND SNAKE, MEMENTO MORI ALEXANDER DERKACHENKO: SKULL AND SNAKE, MEMENTO MORI By Alexander Derkachenko, signed with the artist’s mark Ukraine, c. 1990s Finely carved in caramel-stained mammoth tusk as a coiled snake writhing around a skull, the snake’s eyes inlaid with dark horn, the underside with two asymmetrical himotoshi and the artist’s typical signature. HEIGHT 3.5 cm Condition: Small chip to two teeth. Otherwise excellent condition. Provenance: Austrian private collection, acquired from the artist directly. Memento mori (Latin for ‘remember that you will die’) is an artistic and symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death. Altogether sobering, and in some sense comforting, it’s an epitaph for the masses – commoners and kings alike. Such art, which already appeared in ancient cultures, is also associated with festivals in remembrance and honor of the deceased, as held by many peoples throughout the world. (1655 Zurich - 1712 ibid.): Alexander the Great riding to the hunt, in the foreground dog handler with pack, , Etching Technique: Etching on Paper, mounted on Paper Date: Description: Seated on horseback and armed with bow and arrow, a young person rides off to hunt. The characteristic lock of hair on his forehead suggests Alexander the Great. However, the feminine features could also be a reference to Diana, the goddess of the hunt. In front, a man leads the hounds. In the background, a troop is riding towards the forest. Keywords: Mythology, Allegory, Hunting, Alexander the Great, City, Jadghunds, 17th century, Baroque, Hunting, Switzerland, Size: Paper: 13,1 cm x 18,3 cm (5,2 x 7,2 in) Condition: Rather good condition.
