A GREEK EMBROIDERED PANEL WITH MAIDENS AND AVIARY MOTIFS Greek islands, ex-Ottoman Western Provinces, second half 19th century The elongated rectangular panel of plain weave fawn-coloured linen finely worked in ochre, russet, pale pink, white and blue cotton threads, with a symmetric and directional design of floral urns and birds both in flight and perched on vegetal branches, alternating with stylised Greek maidens clad in traditional costumes, the ground livened by flowers, foliage and trellis, set within concentric decorative borders with further floral motifs, mounted, glazed and framed, 54cm x 134cm including the frame.
