A NEAR PAIR OF CARVED TURKISH MEERSCHAUM COSMETIC BOTTLES AND A LARGE COSMETIC POWDER CONTAINER Eskişehir, North-Western Turkey, dated 1929, made by the master carver Ali Osman Comprising a near pair of Meerschaum (sepiolite) cosmetic bottles, possibly used for essential oils or kohl containers, each of rounded cylindrical shape with narrow shoulders, resting on a short circular base, with a flared neck embellished with a floral collar, surmounted by a screwed-on knob-like stopper, signed and dated on the body Eskişehir, Ali Osman 1929, the style and design influenced by European fashion and 20th-century portable perfume and cosmetic bottles, the tallest 7cm high; and a large rounded container accompanied by a small bottle in the shape of a vase, with a screwed-on stick-like applicator, possibly used for kohl, cosmetic power or perfume, the overall design reminiscent in shape of 18th-century European inkwells, carved with profuse rosette festoons and vine scrolls, the sloping rounded body surmounted by a hemispherical lid with a classical Graeco-Roman-inspired youth head wearing a floral crown, signed on the base Ali Osman Eskişehir no.75, 10.5cm x 9.5cm.
