A COSMETIC TRAVEL POUCH WITH APPLICATOR Qajar Iran, late 18th - 19th century The pouch of rectangular shape terminating into a cusped ogival arch, the exterior embellished with two silver repoussé plaques, the front panel of square shape and decorated with a cusped arabesque cartouche in-filled with a lion attacking a gazelle, the back panel shaped as an arch in-filled with a floral triumph with birds spraying from an urn-like vase in the centre, the interior lined in late Safavid or early Qajar yellow metal thread embroidery on a green ground, with circular vegetal crowns in-filled with boteh (paisley leaves), accompanied by a cosmetic applicator for sormeh (also known as kohl, antimony powder for the eyes), 14.2cm x 7.3cm.
