AN INDIAN OPENWORK BRASS 'ALAM (STANDARD) WITH MAKARA HEADS Deccan, Central India, 19th century The drop-shaped central panel resting on a short tubular shaft, its interior pierced showcasing in reserve the names of Allah, the Prophet Muhammad, and his cousin and son-in-law, 'Ali, the first Shi'a Imam, surmounted by a tall rectangular frilled crest standing on a plain, lobed, flower-shaped cartouche, the exterior with pierced split palmette profiles and two pairs of makara heads, mounted on a black metal stand, 44cm high including the stand.
