AN UNMARKED BURMESE REPOUSSÉ SILVER PRESENTATION BETEL BOX ON STAND Rangoon, Burma (Myanmar), late 19th century Comprising a large, deep rounded bowl with slightly tapering walls and a thick, reinforced, circular rim, resting on a plain circular base, accompanied by a heavily ornate, pull-off, domed lid surmounted by a cast figure of a male dancer in traditional Burmese attire standing on a pedestal, and supported by a stepped circular stand with an ovolo edge raised upon four sloping feet cast in the shape of mythical temple lions (chinthe), each individual element of the set enhanced with high-relief repoussé vegetal and figural decoration including several scenes from Burmese folklore myths and Buddhist tales such as the Jataka Tales focusing on the values of piety, self-sacrifice and kindness, auspicious animals like peacocks, and profuse vegetal meanderings, foliage, floral scrolls, and cloud collars, the dense decorative repertoire articulated in overlapping horizontal bands, unmarked, the full set 45.5cm high, its total weight 2410gr. (divided between the lid 736gr., the stand 651gr, and the large bowl 1023gr.)
