AN ANGLO-INDIAN MILITARY ENCAMPMENT SCENE Possibly Northern India or England, Victorian period, mid to late 19th century Opaque pigments, ink, white wash, and pencil on paper, the horizontal-format composition depicting an Anglo-Indian encampment scene with colonial Victorian British officials and elite members of a Northern Indian or Sikh court, wearing sumptuous bejewelled turbans with tall aigrettes, possibly the scene a commemorative painting of a diplomatic exchange during one of the Anglo-Sikh Wars (1845 – 46; and 1848 – 49), the turned English infantry official in the lower right corner wearing a typical mid-19th century colonial helmet, and the standing official next to the admiral wearing a Scottish tartan uniform, indicating his nationality, the official 1801 British Union Jack flag showing above the tent, elephants and canons wheeled in the distant background on the upper right corner, unsigned, mounted, glazed and set in a briar frame, 54.5cm x 61cm including the frame.
