A BRASS-MOUNTED GOLD-DAMASCENED (KOFTGARI) STEEL CEREMONIAL SHIELD (DHAL) Punjab, Sindh, Northern India, circa 1850 Of circular convex shape with reinforced rim, featuring four appliqué domed floral bosses within a silver-inlaid interlaced and knotted steel band terminating in a snake's head and tail, the central medallion in-filled with a stylised four-petalled flower head surrounded by smaller koftgari flowers, possibly rosettes or marigolds, and a gold-damascened calligraphic band in nasta'liq script, the outer border enhanced with a crown of appliqué brass floral scrolls within a cusped steel band, the ground livened by gold cusped arabesque medallions interspersed by vegetal meanderings, the interior lined in red velvet with grips, 31cm diam.
