A DEEPLY CARVED ANGLO-INDIAN EBONY BOX WITH A PALATIAL SETTING AND VEGETATION Possibly Calcutta (Kolkata) or Mysore, India, late 19th century Of rectangular shape, surmounted by a hinged lid with gently sloping edges, and an oval lock in the front, the deeply carved wooden plaques decorated at the top with a garden pavilion flanked by a three-tiered cchajjas structure with balconies and balusters, surrounded by lush vine trellis and grape bunches, interlocking rosette scrolls, fleshy foliage, wild birds and a long-fur dog in the front, a band of pseudo-acanthus leaves meanderings around the edges, the vegetal, floral and animal motifs repeated on the smaller side panels, the interior and the base lined in modern red velvet, 5.8cm x 20.4cm x 14.5cm.
