A SEATED PORTRAIT OF THE FIVE-FACED (PANCHAMUKHA) HINDU GODDESS, GAYATRI, MOTHER OF THE VEDAS Possibly Kangra or Nurpur in Kangra style, Provincial Pahari School, Himalayan Foothills, Northern India, ca. 1840 - 1860 Opaque pigments heightened with gold and silver on paper, the vertical-format composition depicting the personified divine form of the Gayatri Mantra, the five-faced (panchamukha) Gayatri Devi, Vedamata, Mother of the Sacred Scriptures, the Vedas, and consort of Brahma, the Lord of Creation, seated on a wide lotus throne under a caparisoned golden parasol, supported by a white swan, the vahana (vehicle) of the goddess of Knowledge and Art, Saraswati, holding a number of attributes belonging to Puranic Hindu male deities like Vishnu's conch shell, club, and chakram (quoit), and Shiva's trisula (trident) and snake, flanked by two female attendants holding a morchal and a fly-whisk, set within concentric black rules, mounted, glazed and framed, 42cm x 37cm including the frame.
