A SIKH SILVER AND GOLD-INLAID KOFTGARI STEEL BELT BUCKLE AN EYE FOR DETAIL: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ESTATE IN NORTHERN LONDON Punjab, Northern India, 19th century Of narrow rectangular shape, made of two parts of steel sliding in opposite directions and revealing a concealed blade, the gold-damascened front of the buckle decorated with two wide bands of rosette scrolls encasing a single line of Gurmukhi script relating to the Deg Teg Fateh Sikh slogan (Victory to Charity and Arms), also the title of an anthem in the Punjabi language embodying the dual obligations of the Khalsa, the reverse with typical silver-inlaid chevron patterns, 8.5cm x 4.5cm. The Gurmukhi inscription reads as follows: Deg Teg jag me dou chale Rakkhyo moye aap, avar na daley ('The World has Two Aspects, Deg - Charity and Teg - Sword, fighting for a good cause; oh Lord protect me so that enemies can't harm me!')
