A REVERSE GLASS PAINTING OF AN INDIAN ARMORIAL TRIUMPH AN EYE FOR DETAIL: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ESTATE IN NORTHERN LONDON Possibly Lahore, or Southern India, late 19th century Opaque pigments, polychrome enamels, white wash, and gold leaf on glass, the vertical-format composition depicting an armorial triumph featuring a central lotus pedestal resting on a pair of facing lions, scrolling Western-style acanthus leaves, and winged cherubs, surmounted by the talismanic Hamsa hand covered in heavily encrusted necklaces and jewellery, flanked by a pair of parakeets regardant and a caparisoned parasol at the top, the complete armoury comprising a plethora of traditional Indian arms and armours including katar daggers, Rajput dhal shields, Deccani maces, tulwar swords, Punjabi chakram quoits, and even whips, the frieze at the bottom of the foreground with a group of daily vessels and bottles, framed, 44cm x 38cm including the frame.
