A FINE INDIAN METAL THREAD-EMBROIDERED RED VELVET PROCESSIONAL PARASOL AN EYE FOR DETAIL: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ESTATE IN NORTHERN LONDON Possibly Udaipur, Rajasthan, North-Western India, mid to late 19th century The joined circular ground of crimson red velvet heavily and elaborately worked in white and yellow metallic threads wrapped around a silk core in many sewing techniques, including French knots, other various stitches, and spangles, the central medallion on the front portraying the Rajput dynastic symbol of the Udaipur family, a royal sun with a human face, surrounded by a floral stem with lotus flowers and large rosettes alternating pairs of peacocks, birds, and serrated leaves, encased within a frieze of rosette sprays on the outer edge, the reverse almost identical with the small variation of a spangle-stitched crescent moon in the central medallion, edged in metal thread fringe, mounted on a steel rod, now partially bent, 101cm high.
