A TRADITIONAL PARROT-HEADED STRINGED DOTARA (CHORDOPHONE) AN EYE FOR DETAIL: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ESTATE IN NORTHERN LONDON Possibly Bangladesh or West Bengal, Eastern India, first half 20th century The carved hardwood plucked musical instrument reminiscent of an Indian sarod but larger in size and more elaborate in design, with a deep rounded soundbox at the end covered in dark red and ochre yellow-painted, and pierced hide, once accompanied by two or four strings (now missing), rising to a tapering narrow neck culminating in a rectangular peg box, the head carved with a green parakeet with a long tail reaching the peg box, the exterior painted in polychromes and white wash, ca. 81.5cm long.
