THREE LARGE POLYCHROME-PAINTED CARVED WOODEN ARCHITECTURAL PANELS WITH NINE HINDU GODDESSES AND GANESHA AN EYE FOR DETAIL: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ESTATE IN NORTHERN LONDON Gujarat, North-Western India, 18th century Comprising three tall wooden rectangular panels accompanied by a smaller individual one, all part of the same set, the front deeply carved with niches under elaborate, lobed arches accommodating Hindu deities, their attributes, and vehicles (vahanas), replicating the design of a Hindu temple facade, each niche and figure painted in polychromes including red, yellow, blue, green, black and white, certain attributes highlighted in gold, each figure seated on a lotus pedestal and flanked by refined, multi-tiered columns, the spandrels in-filled with pairs of animals and mythical creatures, the heavily adorned and crowned female deities wearing short-sleeved choli tops and diaphanous bottoms, Ganesha with a bare chest and voluminous trousers, the selection of nine female deities possibly linked to the nine manifestations of the Hindu Goddess Durga (Navadurga), especially worshipped during Navaratri and Durga Puja by the followers of Shaktism and Shaivism sects, or a regional female variant of the personified Nine Planets of Indian astrology (Navagraha), the three larger panels mounted on black wooden stands, each niche approx. 41cm x 37.5cm, the larger joint panels 123cm high, 184cm x 41cm including the stand.
