A CAST AND ENGRAVED BRONZE MAKARA HEAD FINIAL AN EYE FOR DETAIL: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ESTATE IN NORTHERN LONDON South India, 19th century Cast in the round, the tubular finial designed in the shape of a mythical makara head with curved snout, wide-open nostrils, large bulging eyes, sharp fangs, and thick mane, engraved with vegetal and floral designs, and whiskers on the cheeks, horns and around the lips, the pierced tongue a likely later addition, once screwed onto another element, perhaps a spout, now missing, 7cm diam. and 21cm long.
