et physique de l'empire de la Chine et de la Tartarie chinoise. Paris: Du Halde, 1735. First edition of this grandiose encyclopaedic work on China. Du Halde, a Parisian Jesuit, compiled this work based on the accounts of twenty-seven Jesuit missionaries, documenting crucial aspects of Chinese civilization, from the organization of the state to agriculture and the manufacture of porcelain, one of the earliest European sources on this subject. The work also includes the first biography of Vitus Bering and the first published account of his 1728 voyage through the Bering Strait, accompanied by the first printed representation of part of present-day Alaska, here in the form of a map. Du Halde's collection profoundly influenced Enlightenment intellectuals, stimulating discussions on monarchy, deism, and natural religion. The 42 maps of China and Korea, made by Jean-Baptiste Régis and Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, were first published in this work, which was translated into several languages and became a key reference source on China in the 16th-18th centuries, still retaining its historical value today. 4 volumes, Folio, (433 x 280mm). Title pages printed in red and black with chinoiserie vignettes, a few illustrations in the text, 65 maps and plates outside the text, many folding and double-page as follows: vol. I, 25 plates; vol. II, 10 plates; vol. III, 5 engraved plates including the musical plate 'Air Chinois'; vol. IV, 25 plates (light browning, a few leaves with light marginal dampstaining, otherwise a good copy). Contemporary calf, title gilt to spine, spine gilt, marbled endpapers. (4)
