Exceptional Waniugo Janus mask, Ivory Coast, Senufo. Zoomorphic mask, two-faced, mixed creature of crocodile, warthog and others, with two toothed open mouths, from which large tusks protrude laterally. Two chameleons on top holding a small bowl for magical material. Carved wood, mottled brown patina and white pigment. Various broken areas on tusks and teeth restored/repaired. H. 43 cm, l. 76 cm. This type of mask is associated with the poro initiation society and was used to perform magical rituals. Provenance: Peer Hultberg Collection (1935-2007), Hamburg.
