Description

France, Third Republic (1870-1940). Light cavalry troop saber, model 1882, with the same number. Cast brass mounting with two secondary branches. Cap with bead surmounted by a riveted dome-button and short tail, curved beak plate. Wooden spindle covered with brass filigree basane. The main guard branch is stamped "G" under a star, "C" in a circle (twice) and stamped "8849". Natural leather tie. Beautiful straight blade in its dried grease, with two grooves and flat back with minute trace of marking (illegible, Manufacture d'Armes de Châtellerault?), no visible hallmark on the heel. Steel scabbard with white polished finish and minor traces of rust blossom oxidation, with one suspension ring, with the same "8849" serial number, and hallmarked "F" in a circle and "C" in a circle. 110 cm (blade 94.5 cm). (Good condition). . Straight blade with stained gray patina and traces of orange peel oxidation, . Orange peel oxidized steel scabbard with two suspension rings and symmetrical lyre-shaped sting. The top strap is numbered "88". 113.5 cm (blade 94 cm). (Restored basane handle and later brass filigree, as is).
